First impressions mean a lot, but sometimes they can be deceiving! The plantain is certainly a relation of the banana, but while it looks similar, there are some key differences both in terms of taste and nutrition. For a start, plantains aren't as sweet, and are starchier than a banana - but don't think that means they are any less delicious. Plantains are typically cooked before eating, and they are comparable to potatoes when it comes to calorific value. But nutrition wise, the comparison ends there. Plantains are a healthy substitute to potatoes and are packed full of vitamins (such as A, C and B-6).

We come from 'Plantain Country' - a lively tropical environment when the nutritional benefits supplied by plantain helped fuel an energetic lifestyle. Summers meant a trip to our grandparents' house in the countryside, where our Grandfather, affectionately known as 'Tah Tah', would educate us in the difference between plantains and bananas, and many other fruits. So for us, the name stuck.
